The dual-mass flywheel acts as a damper for these vibrations. Through its springs, it prevents the peak combustion forces from being transmitted to the gearbox.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBy smoothing out these forces, smooth power transmission from the engine to the gearbox is achieved, leading to longer component life and preventing the gears from wearing out. The manufacturer designed the dual-mass flywheel for the DQ250 gearboxes to handle up to 420Nm of torque for daily use.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut what happens beyond that? When the torque exceeds 420Nm, the springs inside the factory flywheel reach their limit, and the combustion forces beyond this point hammer the entire drivetrain—from the crankshaft and bolts to the gears, axles, and finally to the tires. The factory flywheel was not designed to handle hybrid or big turbo setups, slick tires for launches, or 10,000 RPM.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs enthusiasts of vehicle performance and having experienced repeated issues with the DQ250 transmissions in our own 2.0 TFSI race car, we decided to find a solution. Our engineers’ mindset is to design something that enhances performance with better mechanisms and materials. In the new flywheel we designed, we set the bar high in terms of quality, durability, and longevity, allowing it to handle from 770Nm to 1200Nm of torque. It was tested and developed in our own race car.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eProof of its success? We managed to break the European record with a 7.8-second run using a 2.0L TSI engine, reaching nearly 300 km\/h at Santa Pod Raceway in England in 2022. This achievement motivated us to further invest in this product, as it ensured smooth operation without damage to the transmission, leading us to become European champions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOur latest version is made of high-strength chromoly steel (42CrMo4), and the splines undergo thermal treatment for maximum durability. The springs are twice as strong as the factory ones, but the key improvement is the progressive spring design. The initial springs are softer, allowing the flywheel to operate smoothly at lower loads. Another advantage over the factory flywheel is that ours is modular, meaning it can be serviced or upgraded for even more torque if needed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe new floating design prevents the springs from contacting the moving masses, ensuring smooth operation and longer lifespan of the assembly. For those seeking ultimate performance, every component is dynamically balanced to 0.01G, and the overall weight is 20% lighter than the factory flywheel. After approximately every 5 passes, we would remove the clutch and inspect the wear. We tested numerous friction materials until we finally selected the current material.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe most critical point, however, was in the metal plates, which deformed as the car had to cover the first 18 meters as quickly as possible from a standstill, while at the same time ensuring the clutch did not overheat to avoid slipping at high speeds and under high turbo pressures. This led to extensive testing with many materials until we found a steel that had a high friction coefficient but was also highly resistant to high temperatures, as its crystalline structure prevented it from deforming as easily as other materials, including the factory parts. The material we use is thermally treated with tempering, which relieves stress and prevents deformation under the extremely high temperatures generated during the clutch's operation during the launch.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe result was not only the time we achieved but also the track and European record for front-wheel-drive cars: 1.3006 seconds in the 0-18 meters.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eA few words about power transmission.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTorque is generated by the engine and transferred through the drivetrain components: flywheel, clutch, gearbox, differential, axles, and ultimately to the wheels. What is the role of the clutch here? The clutch needs to transfer the engine's revolutions and torque to the gearbox during launch, where the engine goes from 5,000 RPM in launch control to turning the gearbox at 0 RPM. There are fixed and rotating components. In the clutch, the fixed components are the organic discs mounted with mechanisms on the clutch and connected to the gearbox, while the rotating components include the engine, flywheel, clutch basket, and the metal plates, which are integrated and floating on it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs the driver initiates the launch by releasing the brake while flooring the throttle, the gearbox control unit compresses a piston that pushes the metal plates, squeezing the organic discs. The friction generated between these components causes the fixed discs to rotate at the same speed as the rotating ones.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo achieve this, several factors come into play, such as the friction coefficient, the surface area, the radius at which the friction materials are located relative to the axis, the cooling rate, and the heat dissipation, which is forced convection.
